Slingerlands: Community Invited to the Bethlehem Children’s School Open House

 

The Bethlehem Children’s School, an independent pre-kindergarten through eighth grade school with an environmental education curriculum focus, invites the community to its Open House Sept. 23 from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. This will be an opportunity to visit and tour the school, set on four wooded acres at 12 Fisher Blvd. in Slingerlands.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Giffy’s Bar-B-Q school fundraiser, so people are also welcome to join the school for dinner and make it an evening for the whole family. The school will have ongoing hands-on activities in its classrooms, trail hikes on the property and outdoor projects.

The Bethlehem Children’s School calls itself a little school with a big education, nurturing creative, confident learners in a green environment. The school provides solid, nurturing learning with minimal stress in a family-style atmosphere with devoted imaginative teachers. The school features small multiage classrooms with no standardized tests. The calling of the Bethlehem Children’s School is to help all children determine the skills they naturally possess and how they learn best in order to promote an enthusiasm for being a more curious, more involved and more effective lifelong learner.

This year's school-wide theme is “Compassion for All. Sustaining Our Future.”

Troy: Class of 1964 Returns to High School to Celebrate 50th Reunion

You can always go home again. As part of their 50th Reunion celebration, 50 members of the Troy High School (THS) Class of 1964 will tour the school at 1950 Burdett Avenue Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. and have the chance to relive their teenage days. For some alumni, this will be the first time they have visited their beloved alma mater in the 50 years.

The tour will be led by current students who are members of THS Student Council. The tour was coordinated in part by class member Martin Strosberg, professor of healthcare management at Union Graduate College.

“Our class made everlasting bonds during our time at THS,” he said. “As the years go by, we grow even more appreciative of the time we had there together. We received a great education that set us on solid paths to success. We are all greatly looking forward to this visit.”

In addition to the tour of THS, the Class of 1964 will take a tour of downtown Troy, shop the Troy Farmer’s Market, enjoy a dinner dance at the Troy Country Club, and end their celebration with brunch on the Captain JP Sept. 21.

The Sage Colleges: Dedicating Gretchen’s Garden

 

Sept. 20 at 9 a.m., the Sage Colleges will dedicate a renovated area of center campus to be named “Gretchen’s Garden” in honor of Russell Sage College alumna Gretchen Alberty Schindler, a member of the class of 1955.

Schindler met her husband, Hal, an RPI student, while she was attending Sage. When she died in 2013, Hal Schindler wanted to do something special to honor her memory. Because of her love for Russell Sage College and given that their journey together began on campus, he thought a garden named in her memory would be a fitting tribute.

The newly planted, sculpted garden and a memorial plaque will be unveiled during the dedication. The garden is located on the Russell Sage campus on the east side of Second Street between Ackerman Hall and the Troy Public Library.

Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia, Sage President Susan Scrimshaw, Troy Public Library Director Paul Hicok, and Hal Schindler and family will be in attendance for the dedication. More than 25 Russell Sage alumnae will also be in attendance to participate in Leadership Day activities and plan for their upcoming reunion.

Interdisciplinary academics, community engagement, international exposure, and artistic and athletic endeavors are among the pillars of the educational experience at the Sage Colleges. Sage enrolls more than 3,000 students in bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs at the coeducational undergraduate Sage College of Albany, the undergraduate Russell Sage College for women in Troy, and the graduate-level Esteves School of Education, School of Health Sciences and School of Management, with programs on both campuses.

Welcome to Our New Blog: School's in!

Welcome to "Extra Credit"--the place to go for education news from around the region.

I'm Jennie Grey, and I have been the Saratogian's business and education reporter for the past two years. Now my fellow reporter Lauren Halligan is covering business for the region, while I have an expanded education beat.

In Saratoga County, I will be mainly covering the school districts of Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa and Schuylerville. 

In Rensselaer County, I will be focused on the districts of Troy, Cohoes, Lansingburgh and Watervliet.

My college coverage will encompass Skidmore, RPI, HVCC, Sage and Empire State.

I'll also be writing about BOCES and general education issues that affect everyone.
