Wood Road Elementary School students in Ballston Spa recently learned more about how to become kids of character through Wood Road’s Character Education program. This month, Mrs. Van Volkenburg's third-graders teamed up with art teacher Mrs. Busch and music teacher Mr. Bailey, and taught Wood Road Elementary students about generosity at a schoolwide meeting. The third-grade students spoke about the generosity that has been seen throughout Wood Road Elementary School already this year. The Wood Road students raised more than $1,000 for the annual Penny Harvest program, brought in gently used clothing for Scottie’s Closet, collected more than 300 pounds of candy for the troops and donated food items to fill Thanksgiving Baskets for Wood Road families.
Students
learned that being generous isn’t only about donating items or money,
and that they could also be generous with their time. Mrs. Van
Volkenburg’s class shared
a story called One Winter’s Day, which is about a very generous
hedgehog. Mr. Bailey led a schoolwide singalong of “Put a Little Love
in Your Heart.” After learning about generosity, Wood Road students had
the opportunity to be generous as they each
made a small green snowflake that was then put together with their
classmates' to form wreaths. The wreaths were then donated to nearby
hospitals and nursing homes for the holiday season.
